Child and Teen Checkups

Learn about Child and Teen Checkups for Minnesota Health Care Programs members.

What are Child and Teen Checkups?

Child and Teen Checkups are part of the Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) program in Minnesota. This is a federal program for children and teens from birth through age 20, and who are eligible for Medical Assistance (Minnesota's Medicaid program). It helps ensure they are meeting growth and developmental milestones with regular checkups and immunizations (shots).

What can I expect at a Child and Teen Checkup?

These visits are a chance for you to ask questions and get answers about your child’s or your own health (teens). During a Child and Teen Checkup (C&TC) visit, the doctor will do things like:

  • Check height, weight, development and growth
  • Make sure immunizations are up-to-date
  • Provide dental, hearing and vision screenings
  • Blood lead testing
  • Discuss healthy eating, safety tips and general healthcare
  • Talk about how to manage stress, as well as social and learning issues
  • Talk about the risks of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco use (teens)
  • And much more, depending on your child's or your own needs (teens)

The Minnesota Department of Health has more information on Child and Teen Checkups and why they are important.
