Renewing your Medical Assistance health coverage

Prepare for your annual renewal

The Department of Human Services (DHS) requires an annual review process for all members participating in any Minnesota Public Health Programs. You will need to have your eligibility renewed on a yearly basis before the date of your original enrollment date.

The following Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and Blue Plus plans require annual renewal through the state of Minnesota:

DHS will use the information they currently have to decide if you or your family member(s) still qualify for coverage. If DHS needs more information from you to make a coverage decision, they will send you a renewal letter in the mail.

Look up your eligibility renewal date

Find out when DHS will send your renewal paperwork to you by entering two of the following options in the Renewal Date look up tool: Member Identification, Case number or Social Security number.

What to do to prepare for renewal

Update your contact information

Make sure your county or tribal agency has your current mailing address, phone number or other contact information and make sure it's updated each time you move. This will ensure DHS will be able to contact you when it’s time to renew your coverage.

If you are unsure who to call, please refer to the Minnesota tribal and county directory or Health Care Consumer Support line to find the contacts that can assist you with getting your contact information updated or questions about your eligibility or renewal.

Please make sure to include an email address and a mobile phone number as well if you have one so that we can contact you in the event that your mailing address does not get updated quickly if you make a change of address.

Check your mail and review your renewal form

DHS will send you a mailing letting you know when it's time for your renewal process each year. This mailing will let you know if you need to complete a renewal form to see if you still qualify for Medical Assistance or if you will be auto-renewed.

Review your form for accuracy when you receive it. If required, complete the form and return it to DHS right away to help avoid a gap in your coverage.

What to do if you no longer qualify

Currently employed

If you no longer qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, you may be eligible for health insurance through an employer if you or your spouse are employed. Reach out to your employer (typically Human Resources handles this) and ask how you might be able to enroll.

If you are eligible to enroll through your employer, they will be able to enroll you in a special enrollment period for this request.

Renewal process resources

The Minnesota Department of Human Services has a number of resources to assist with the renewal process including Navigators that can help you with renewal submissions.

Use these tips to stay aware and safe

  • Be cautious of anyone asking for your personal, medical, and financial information. Government agencies, health insurance providers, and doctors do not call people to ask them for money or personal information. They will never ask you to verify your Social Security, bank account, or credit card number, and they won’t ask you to wire money or pay with a gift card.
  • People who assist you through the renewal process will never ask you for money or pressure you into signing up for a plan.

SecureBlueSM (HMO SNP) is a health plan that contracts with both Medicare and the Minnesota Medical Assistance (Medicaid) program to provide benefits of both programs to enrollees. Enrollment in SecureBlue depends on contract renewal.
