Mark Steffen, MD, MPH
Senior vice president, medical management and chief medical officer
As senior vice president of medical management and chief medical officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, Dr. Mark Steffen oversees medical and care management strategies for the company’s 2.5 million members. Additionally, Dr. Steffen is responsible for leading our care management, health equity, population health and affordability strategies, including our community-focused strategies.
Dr. Steffen is an experienced medical executive and holds three board certifications in Family Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine. He came to Blue Cross in 2018 after spending several years in managed care where he focused on population health and value-based care. Dr. Steffen spent five years at the Mayo Clinic in the Division of Preventive, Occupational and Aerospace Medicine where he served as the Medical Director of the Preventive Services Clinic and as education chair for the division. Dr. Steffen’s career leadership began with a three-year tenure as medical director for the Fairview Red Wing Medical Center, a position in which he collaborated with local businesses to improve health and control costs. He began his career focusing on rural family medicine in Zumbrota, Minn.
Dr. Steffen received his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry/molecular biology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and both his medical degree and master’s in public health from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Steffen chairs the board of Blue Plus, the health maintenance organization (HMO) affiliate of Blue Cross, and sits on the board for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation. He is also a board member for Minnesota Community Measurement, an organization that uses data from providers, insurers and state agencies to analyze and improve health care cost and quality.
