Carey Smith

As senior vice president and chief operating officer (COO), Carey Smith has responsibility for all health plan operations at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, including customer service, claims processing, information technology, data and analytics, artificial intelligence, performance measurement and improvement, procurement and vendor management, and consumer operations.

Smith’s 30-year career is rooted in the development, implementation and advancement of business technology and operations. He first worked for Blue Cross from 2012 to 2017 as an information technology executive. During this time, Smith developed a transformation strategy to deliver more modernized and proficient IT delivery capabilities. Smith rejoined Blue Cross in 2022 in his current role.

Additionally, Smith has held senior leadership roles at Orchid Insurance, Constellation Insurance, Travelers Insurance, Ameriprise and Thomson Reuters.

Industry recognition for Smith includes being named among the 30 Most Influential Business Leaders in Tech for 2022 by CIO Look; the 10 Best CTOs of 2020 by Industry Era; and as a finalist for the 2020 CIO of the Year as part of the Twin Cities CIO ORBIE Awards.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in information technology and psychology from Montana State University Billings. Smith sits on the board of Blue Health Intelligence.
