Carey Smith

Carey Smith has been a member of the Blue Cross senior leadership team since 2022. In 2025,  he began to develop and implement technology products and services as president of a new business unit called Xcelerate Health. In its initial stages of development, Xcelerate Health will be structured and staffed to drive innovation and enhanced capabilities across the healthcare market. At the same time, Smith with continue to have strategic oversight of Blue Cross’ technology architecture and integration under the title of Chief Technology and Innovation Officer.

Smith’s 30-year career is rooted in the development, implementation and advancement of business technology and operations. He first worked for Blue Cross from 2012 to 2017 as an information technology leader. During this time, Smith developed a transformation strategy to deliver more modernized and proficient IT delivery capabilities.

Additionally, Smith has held senior leadership roles at Orchid Insurance, Constellation Insurance, Travelers Insurance, Ameriprise and Thomson Reuters.

Industry recognition for Smith includes being named among the 30 Most Influential Business Leaders in Tech for 2022 by CIO Look; the 10 Best CTOs of 2020 by Industry Era; and as a finalist for the 2020 CIO of the Year as part of the Twin Cities CIO ORBIE Awards.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in information technology and psychology from Montana State University Billings. Smith sits on the board of Blue Health Intelligence, a data analytics and software-as-a-service company owned by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and 17 of the nation’s Blue Plans.
