What is a behavioral health condition?
Behavioral health is a term that spans the full spectrum of mental and emotional well-being, including how people cope with day-to-day challenges. The term also includes the treatment of mental illnesses, such as depression or anxiety, as well as substance use disorder and other addictive behaviors.
Common behavioral health conditions include:
- Addictions – Dependence on or abuse of harmful substances or activities that interferes with daily life; despite adverse consequences.
- Anxiety – Symptoms and treatment
- Depression – Symptoms and treatment
- Eating disorders – A serious illness associated with changes in eating behaviors & severe preoccupation with food and body image.
- Stress – Symptoms and how to manage them
Care options
Members have a range of care options, support, and coverage for mental health and substance use concerns.
Behavioral health care options include:
- Virtual and telehealth services – Receive care from your provider on your computer, tablet or smartphone.
- Outpatient services – Therapy programs, individual treatment planning, diagnostic assessments, medication management, psychological testing.
- Inpatient services – Hospitals can provide short-term mental health services to help stabilize people in crisis.
- Residential services – A safe and supervised environment in a community based residential program setting. These services may be needed following a hospital stay or to prevent hospitalization.

Telehealth services
Doctor On Demand
Visit with a licensed psychologist or board-certified psychiatrist using the video feature on your phone, tablet or computer. Mental health professionals are available by appointment to help with depression, social anxiety, addictions, relationship issues, trauma and loss or workplace stress.

Living with stress, insomnia, depression, substance use or social anxiety? Learn to Live is an online program that's available anytime to help you work through it.

Specialized support
Behavioral health appointment scheduling
Case managers work with members to identify the right healthcare provider to fit the members' unique needs and preferences, and to help schedule their behavioral health appointments that cover:
- Gender care
- Cultural related care needs
- Provider preferences
- Location preferences

Autism support
Autism navigation services
A Blue Cross navigator is available to assist you throughout the course of your child’s treatment. They will help you find in-network providers who can support the needs of you and your child.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research shows that early intervention treatment services can greatly improve your child’s development.
Options include:
- Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI) services
- Provide clinical guidance and caregiver support
- Ensure access to therapy and skill-based services
- Coordinate with providers and care systems
- Community services

As a Blue Advantage Families and Children or MinnesotaCare member of Blue Plus, you can earn reward cards when you and your family complete preventive screenings and well care visits.
