Employer plans:
If you get insurance through your employer, check with your company's human resources department to find out when the open enrollment period is for your employer's plans.
What if I miss open enrollment and need coverage?
For individual and family plans, you can only enroll outside of the open enrollment period if you have a qualifying life event. These life events allow you to get a health plan outside of open enrollment, as long as you apply within the required time frame — usually within 60 days of the life event — as a special enrollment.
Common life events that qualify for special enrollment include job loss, early retirement, loss of dependent status, a move, marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child.
