Alert: Beware of telephone and email scam campaigns claiming to be Blue Cross

Blue Cross members have recently reported scam phone calls requesting members to confirm their name, address and phone number.

Specifically, members have recently received calls informing them they are eligible for a pain cream that is covered under their Blue Cross coverage. The caller asks them to release personal information to have the pain cream shipped. These calls ARE NOT from Blue Cross. Do not release your personal information as this is a phishing scam.

While Blue Cross does reach out to members over the phone, we want you to be aware of the signs of what may be a scam call. If you receive a call from someone at Blue Cross, we will never ask you to release personal information.

Blue Cross will never call a member asking for release of personal information. In the interest of protecting member privacy, we want to provide the following reminders for “phishing” scams.

These scams, designed to capture personal information (known as “phishing”) are designed to appear as if they are from Blue Cross.

If you get an email from someone that claims to be from Blue Cross requesting personal information:

  • DO NOT click on any links in email.
  • DO NOT reply to the email or reach out to the senders in any way.
  • DO NOT supply any information on the website that may open, if you have clicked on a link in an email.
  • DO NOT open any attachments that arrive with the email.

If you get a phone call from someone that claims to be from Blue Cross requesting personal information or offering a medication update:

  • Do not provide your name, telephone number or email address to the caller
  • Do not provide your social security number, member ID number or any other identification numbers
  • Do not release any private health information, i.e. your current medications, chronic health conditions, etc.

This type of outreach is from scam artists who are trying to trick consumers into sharing personal data.
